Porcelain Crowns in Cranbrook

Porcelain Crowns Near You

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” or cover that is placed over a tooth to restore the shape, size, and strength of the tooth, as well as improve its overall appearance. When the dental crown is cemented into place, it fully encases the visible area of the tooth that lies at the gum line and above.

Why are Dental Crowns Near You Used?

There are a variety of reasons why your dentist may recommend the use of a dental crown. This includes some of the following situations:

  • To protect a weak tooth from cracking or breaking
  • To hold together the parts of a cracked tooth
  • To restore a broken tooth or a tooth that is worn down
  • To cover a tooth with much of the tooth’s structure missing
  • Holding a dental bridge in place
  • Covering a tooth that is misshapen or severely discoloured
  • To cover a dental implant
  • To make cosmetic modifications to a tooth

For children, a dental crown near you may be used on their primary teeth in order to do the following:

  • Save a tooth that is so damaged by tooth decay it cannot support a filling
  • Protect the teeth of children who are at high risk of tooth decay and have difficulties keeping up with good oral hygiene practices

Stainless steel crowns are likely recommended and used to treat children.

Porcelain Crowns

Although there are several types of dental crowns in Cranbrook, BC V1C 2R8, porcelain crowns are the most popular. This is the case because they closely resemble the look of your natural teeth. They are highly durable and can last many years, with proper care. However, like most dental restorations, they eventually require replacement.  Porcelain crowns near you are customized to match the shape, size, and colour of your natural teeth, and are able to go unnoticed once placed in the mouth.

They are crafted to cover the damaged tooth seamlessly, allowing for the functionality of the tooth to be restored. In comparison to metal dental crowns, they have added strength and durability that can withstand chips, cracks, and sensitivity.

The Process

During your first visit with one of our Cranbrook dentists, there may be a need to perform an X-ray and examination, before performing any kind of treatment to the tooth. Once this has been completed, your dentist may schedule a secondary visit to perform the remaining steps. To make room for the placement of the crown, your dentist will give you anesthesia before filing down the tooth along the chewing surface and on the sides. This allows the crown to fit perfectly over the tooth as a result.

In some cases, if a large portion of the tooth is missing, your Cranbrook dentist will need to use filling material to build up the structure of the tooth, in order to support the crown. After reshaping the tooth, your dentist will use a paste to take an impression of the tooth receiving the crown. Impressions of the teeth above and below the treated tooth will also be made to make sure that the crown will not affect your bite.

This impression will be sent to a dental lab for fabrication, which can take 1 to 2 weeks. A temporary crown – made of acrylic – is typically used to cover the filled tooth to ensure it is not exposed during the preparation of the permanent crown. During your second visit, the prepared permanent crown is checked in terms of fit and proper color before it is cemented onto the tooth.

The permanent crown near you can last up to 15 years with proper care, before needing a replacement. It is important to take necessary oral hygiene measures to ensure the porcelain crown lasts as long as possible.
